Most elderberry syrups begin with dried berries simmered in a big pot of water. Ours begins with fresh, locally grown, certified organic Elderberries from our friends at Harpeth Moon Farm, steam-juiced into a rich, deeply concentrated juice.

Elderberries are naturally rich in antioxidants and other fragile plant compounds that too much heat can damage. Steam juicing allows us to extract the juice directly from fresh berries, creating the intensely dark, tart, concentrated Elderberry base we've now used for years.

We took this concentrate a step further with an extract of two of our favorite traditional immune allies:

Turkey Tail Mushroom has a long history of traditional use for immune support and is especially loved for its immune-modulating polysaccharides.

Usnea Lichen is a traditional herbal ally for microbial and immune support.

Together, they turn an already extraordinarily concentrated Elderberry syrup into the kind of formula we want stocked all season long.

Hey! I just wanted to let you know how in love I am with your products. I had used the anti fungal balm over the late summer when I got a little patch of what looked like ring worm, I'm a gardener so I think that's how I got it. I used it over the course of about 2/3 days and it went away. Most recently I had a swollen gland and felt like I was fighting something off. I was taking the elderberry a few times a day and then last night I took some dust bowl tincture with it. This morning the swelling has gone down. Thank you for sharing your gift of herbalism.

Do you apply heat to your syrup preparation?

Cedar Hill Homestead

Hey there, yes we have to apply heat to properly can our syrups. The difference is, we don't hold our Elderberry at high temps for longer than 20 minutes as heat degrades the antioxidant properties overtime. This is not true for all herbs, but it is true for Elderberry.

Frequently Asked Questions about Our Elderberry Syrup Concentrate

What is the difference between elderberry concentrate and regular elderberry syrup?

Most elderberry syrups are made by simmering dried berries in water, so a good portion of what is in the bottle is water. Cedar Hill's Elderberry Syrup Concentrate starts with fresh certified organic berries that are steam-juiced, which extracts the juice directly from the fruit. That is why the daily serving here is one teaspoon.

Are the elderberries organic?

The elderberries are certified organic, grown at Harpeth Moon Farm.

Do you apply heat to the syrup?

Yes, heat is required to properly can the syrup. The difference is that we do not hold our Elderberry at high temperatures for longer than 20 minutes, because sustained heat degrades the antioxidant properties over time. That is specifically true of Elderberry and is not true of every herb.

Where do your elderberries come from?

They are grown by Bruce at Harpeth Moon Farm, a small certified organic farm we have worked with since 2018. He grows them, protects them from the birds, and steam-juices them fresh.

What is it sweetened with?

Raw honey. There is no cane sugar or corn syrup in it. Full ingredients: steam juiced Elderberries, Usnea, Turkey Tail Mushroom, Tangerine, Raw Honey, Ginger, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Allspice, Clove and Cardamom in water.

Why is there mushroom and lichen in an elderberry syrup?

Turkey Tail Mushroom has a long history of traditional use for immune support and is especially loved for its immune-modulating polysaccharides. Usnea Lichen is a traditional herbal ally for microbial and immune support. Together with the concentrated elderberry base, they make the formula we want stocked all season.

How much should I take?

Adults take 1 teaspoon daily for routine seasonal support, or 2 teaspoons twice daily during times of illness. Children take half the adult serving.

Can children take it?

Yes, at half the adult serving. It contains raw honey, so it is not suitable for children under one year old.

How long does a bottle last?

The 4 oz bottle is about 24 adult servings, or 6 days at the increased serving size. The 8 oz bottle is about 48 adult servings, or 12 days at the increased serving size.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

Yes, refrigerate after opening. It is best used within 6 months of opening.

Is it available year round?

No. It is a seasonal product made in batches as we receive fresh pressed juice, and is available in our fall and holiday releases each year.

Do you ship it?

Yes. Orders ship within 7 days of purchase, usually sooner, and you will get tracking by email once the order is scanned at the post office.
